The movie Marie Antoinette has renewed its vogue. The French baroque look relies heavily on what we used to call nick knacks like vases, urns and jars. Especially when you have had items passed down through the family it honors the life of the original purchaser. I think we are a little more utilitarian in repurposing such items. I’ve used antique tea pots to hold bath salts, crystal candy dishes to hold pillar candles, little limoges boxes as salt cellars, as examples.
Everything in moderation. Some people collect crystal, some do use it to decorate with, still others will say they do not as it’s such work to care for in our hi-tech super speed lives of today. A crystal biscuit jar would be perfect as an accent piece on a mantle or sofa table. Personally, I smile every time I use my crystal candle holders. Enjoy!
I think if you use a few pieces here and there you are okay. My mother works for a co. that sells crystal and is always giving it to me. Alot of it I just keep in the boxes and take out occasionally. But I do use a candy dish and a couple of vases. It really depends I think on the style your home is. But make it work for you!
I decorate with my crystal vases. I had some sitting on a white shelf when I moved to this house recently. I had a ton of natural, colored rocks that I’d used to help hold makeup brushes and toothbrushes in small containers. Mom had the idea of filling the crystal vases with the rocks, which match the decor, since I bought the rocks specifically to match the decor of my old bathroom…and my new dining room has the same colors as my old bathroom…freaky…but, anyway, Mom filled the vases and now you can see them stand out on the white shelves, and they look fabulous. I’m glad Mom suggested it. My mother-in-law still sets out her cobalt glass pieces. I say it doesn’t matter what other people think. If you like it and think it looks good, you should do it. You’re the one living there, after all. Why not make it a place you feel happy?
It’s not a trendy thing Decorating with crystal is a classic form that never goes completely out of style, and is never completely in either. Just have taste and don’t over-do it. Also remember that its a classic style, so it probably won’t work if all the other decorations (furniture, etc) and modern. It works best with old-style, hand crafted, high gloss wooden furniture, hand-knotted rugs…that sort of thing. It needs an air of formality to really work.
Of course, this is only my opinion.
Crystal has never went out ! And Never Will ! It is So Beautiful ! Victorian is Very IN !!!!
Go to Auctions or antique stores, and pieces go very high.
I have a lot of crystal in my home that belonged to my great-grandmother. I went to Germany was able to purchase wonderful pieces of red and clear with birds on it, just stunning !
I think everyone decorates to their own taste, I’m into Victorian, where at work most girls are into country, and I can’t stand that. So each to their own.
That’s what keeps life interesting …we all don’t want to be alike., that would be So Boring. So go with what ever catches your eye and ENJOY !!

yups… unless you’re trying for that “country cottage” look, or going for “modern art” type decorating, crystal is awesome for any room.
